Howdy Kevin-could be a Muscari species in your yard. Some look like hyacinths or could Scilla hispana. Now classified as Hyacinthoides. What are of country are you in? Dave

My clivia hardly sends out any flowers and seems to get a powdery deposit on the leaves ( I assume its powdery mildew). Is there any simple solution to these problems. It gets a fair amount of water - perhaps too much

I can't get my clivia to bloom. It gets moderate light in the summer, little water, is an old root-bound plant, seems healthy otherwise, gets winter cooling and bloom-type fertilizer starting in February. What am I doing wrong?

I am very excited to have found this website! I hope someone here can help me with an I.D.. A plant has come up in the middle of my yard and I don't know what it is. I've been told a hyacinth, but it doesn't look like any I have ever seen. Is there an appropriate place for me to post a picture so someone can help?

Many Thanks.
Kevin

Having read your very good article on the Gloriosa Rothschildiana
You said to split tubers just before planting, are there any special procedures?
Regards

Jim

JFPurcelljr - Most bulbs, Freesias included, have an active period of bloom and growth, and then a dormant time where everything dies down. It's perfectly normal.

Cheryl - re Clivia reblooming - Clivia needs a cool rest to rebloom. Try putting it in the coolest room in your house in the fall and give just enough water to keep from wilting. Bring it out after a month and a half or so and it should bloom. Also pot-bound plants bloom better.

bullet sazji on Sunday 22 April 2007 - 19:24:22
Karen - Unless you want to try growing Clivia from seed, remove the forming seedpods if any but leave the main stem. This will eventually yellow and die back as the plant extracts the nutrients from it. Then you can cut it off.

When the blooms fall of of my Clivia Miniata, what do I do with the shoot? I didn't know if I should cut it back or leave it alone. Thank you so much! Karen

Hi I have just joined. I am Andrew, and I am a Gardener in a large private garden in Ireland. The garden is 14 acres and has been under construction for four years now. we are hoping to stop landscaping and start ghardening this year. But first..............

Hi, I've just joined (probably more than once knowing my computer skills). Anywho, I live on 30 acres in the Glasshouse Mountains (Sunshine Coast Qld Australia) and cultivate tropical trees, Sth American bulbs (plus Boophane, Brunsvigias etc) and other strange things...
And, I believe everything is hardy until I've killed it 2 or 3 times myself...Haven't tried Meconopsis yet but I will one day.

MikeHub - for Love in a Mist, the best way is to sow them in the Fall; they'll know when to come up on their own in the spring as long as they are not outcompeted by other things. They will usually self-sow as well.

bullet Sazji on Sunday 30 April 2006 - 14:55:03
Peach Leaf Curl - Nothing really to do now. When the leaves fall or before the buds come in the spring, you can do a fungicide application. A nursery should be able to tell you which to use. Timing's important. Also clean up the fallen leaves as they have spore in them.

You don't say, in the explanation of growing Gloriosa Lilies, how to pant the tubers...Horizontally (I suspect) or vertically in the soil.
Cordially,
